Student Spotlight: India Flowers

Sometimes the stars align to bring two creative individuals from different departments together to execute the perfect vision. That’s what happened when “Advisor.” editor and Siba Fashion Development & Merchandising instructor AK Brown met Siba Graphic Design student India Flowers. Flowers answered a call for cover art submissions for Brown’s exciting new publication
(Advisor.) which dedicates its pages to all things affecting the black fashion community. The cover conceived by the partnership is both stunning and professional. For this “Siba Student Spotlight” blog we spoke to Flowers about how she got started on the project and the things she learned along the way.

What made you decide to get involved in the Advisor. magazine project?

I decided to get involved because it was a great chance to showcase my design skills in a published piece and add something completely different to my portfolio.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

The process involved receiving feedback and making revisions based on the creative team’s preferences. One of the key revisions was adjusting the typeface and layout to better fit the vision for the cover. Communication with my “client” was an important part of ensuring that the final design aligned with their expectations.

The Advisor. cover looks beautiful! What was your inspiration?

My inspiration came from a mix of modern editorial design and creative typography. I wanted to create something visually engaging yet professional, ensuring that the cover reflected both the theme of the edition and a strong design aesthetic.

What was it like working with AK Brown? What kind of feedback did you get?

Working with AK was a great experience! She provided clear direction while also allowing creative flexibility. Some of the feedback included adjustments to the typeface and script placement, ensuring the final design looked polished and cohesive.

Were there specific courses or techniques you learned in class that helped you complete the task?

Yes! My coursework in typography and layout design played a big role in this project. Learning how to balance type, color, and composition helped me refine the final look of the cover. Additionally, my experience using design software like Adobe Illustrator and InDesign was essential.

Is the Advisor. cover something that you’ll include in your portfolio?

Absolutely! This project is a strong addition to my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to collaborate with a team, follow a client’s vision, and execute a polished final design. Having my work featured in a published piece adds credibility and shows potential employers my skills in real-world applications.

Were there any takeaways or words of advice you would offer to other Graphic Design students when it comes to landing an opportunity like this?

My biggest takeaway is the importance of being open to feedback and revisions. Design is a collaborative process, and being able to adapt and refine your work based on client needs is key. I would also encourage students to take on opportunities when they arise—you never know what project might lead to greater exposure or experience!

We have no doubt that upon completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design (she’s pictured above at the graduation ceremony where she received her Associate in Applied Science degree). Flowers’ portfolio will reflect her wide range of skill, talent and creativity. You can check out the latest edition of Advisor. here.
